Shelly 1 Mini Gen4 – Compact built-in switch with WiFi, Zigbee and Matter

So small, so versatile

There is often little space behind wall switches. The Shelly 1 Mini Gen4 measures only 29 x 34 x 16 mm, making it suitable for almost any flush-mounted box. The device switches lighting or other electrical appliances up to 8A via a potential-free relay, and supports WiFi, Zigbee and Matter in one module.

Power supply and connectivity

The module operates on 110-240V AC (50/60 Hz) and requires a neutral wire (blue N-wire). If this is missing behind your switch, the Shelly 1 Mini Gen4 is not suitable for that location. Wireless protocols: WiFi 802.11 b/g/n (2.4 GHz), Bluetooth 5.0 and Zigbee IEEE 802.15.4. Matter certification is present. The module also functions as a WiFi range extender and Bluetooth Gateway.

Functionality and settings

The device has one potential-free relay contact. There is no built-in power measurement; for consumption monitoring per switch, the Shelly 1PM Mini Gen4 is the right choice. The module supports 20 adjustable schedules, webhooks, scripting, MQTT and KNX net/IP. OTA firmware updates are done automatically via the Shelly Smart Control app or local web interface.

⚠️ Pay attention to inductive loads such as LED drivers and fans: the inrush current can damage the relay. Use an RC snubber to dampen this inrush current.

Expansion and accessories

The Shelly 1 Mini Gen4 combines well with a wireless switch for wall control without additional wiring. As a Zigbee repeater, the module directly increases the wireless range in the room where it is installed, provided it is connected to mains power.

Home Assistant

In the standard WiFi/Matter mode, you use the official Shelly integration in Home Assistant for local, cloud-independent control via the RPC protocol. In Zigbee mode, you pair the module via ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT, along with a Zigbee coordinator.

Pairing procedure (WiFi/Shelly integration)

1. Connect the module and wait for the LED to flash.
2. Connect your phone or PC to the WiFi access point Shelly1MiniG4-XXXXXXXXXXXX.
3. Set up your home network via the web interface or Shelly Smart Control app.
4. Home Assistant automatically detects the device (Settings > Devices & services).
5. Confirm the pairing and give the device a name.

Pairing procedure (Zigbee mode)

1. Open the Shelly Smart Control app and navigate to the device.

Example 1 – Light off automatically after closing time

1. Trigger: time reached 11:30 PM.
2. Condition: switch.shelly1minig4 is on.
3. Action: turn off switch.shelly1minig4.
4. Optional: send notification via HA Companion app: “Outdoor light switched off”.

Example 2 – Hall light on with motion, off after 5 minutes

1. Trigger: motion sensor detects presence (binary_sensor.gang_motion becomes on).
2. Condition: time between 9:00 PM and 7:00 AM.
3. Action 1: turn on switch.shelly1minig4.
4. Action 2: wait 5 minutes.
5. Action 3: check if motion sensor is still active; if not, turn off light.

Do I need a hub to use the Shelly 1 Mini Gen4?

Via WiFi, the device works standalone on your local network and Home Assistant connects directly via the Shelly integration. For Zigbee, you need a Zigbee coordinator. For Matter, a Matter-compatible controller is required.

Is a neutral wire mandatory?

Yes. The Shelly 1 Mini Gen4 requires a neutral wire (blue N-wire) behind the switch. If this wire is missing in your installation, this device is not suitable. Check this in advance or consult an electrician.
