Description

The Zooz XS Relay ZEN57 800 EU is the smallest professional Z-Wave switching relay for European installations and provides full on/off control for lighting and low-power appliances up to 5 Amps. This ultra-compact relay with the Z-Wave 800 series chip supports Z-Wave Long Range technology for wireless range up to 400 meters (1300 feet) when your hub supports this feature. With support for both 120V and 240V (100-240V AC, 50/60Hz), the ZEN57 is ideal for European homes and fits into even the smallest and most crowded back boxes where standard relays simply won't fit.

Unique compact form factor

Significantly smaller than the popular ZEN51 , the ZEN57 is specifically designed for tight switch cabinets, shallow backboxes, or direct mounting on light fixtures. Measuring just 30 x 25 x 15 mm (1.2" x 1" x 0.6"), this relay fits where other smart relays fail. It features screw terminals for easy LINE, LOAD, and NEUTRAL connections, plus two pigtail wires for dry contact switch input.

Wet contact relay with dry contact switch

The ZEN57 uses a wet contact relay , meaning the output relay carries the mains voltage (LINE). This distinguishes it from the ZEN51, which has a dry contact relay. However, the switch input operates as a dry contact via pigtail wires , allowing you to use both regular toggle switches and momentary switches. This configuration is perfect for single-pole installations when the line and load are in the same box .

Load capacity and applications

At 120V:

  • 5A resistive
  • 500W incandescent bulbs
  • 150W LED lighting

At 240V (Europe):

  • 5A resistive
  • 1000W incandescent bulbs
  • 300W LED lighting

Note: Due to the 5A resistive relay, the ZEN57 cannot be used with inductive loads such as motors, fans, or pumps. For these applications, we recommend:

Zooz ZEN17 Universal Relay (2x NO/NC, more robust for inductive loads)

Zooz ZEN51 Dry Contact Relay (10A, suitable for heavier loads)

Recommended applications

Ideal for:

  • Tight Switch Boxes : Perfect for shallow or crowded wall boxes where the ZEN51 is too large
  • Rear mechanical switch : Excellent for single-pole installations when load and power are in the same box
  • At the fixture : Suitable for direct installation in the junction box of the lamp
  • Multi-switch configurations : Can be used with regular or momentary switches in series, but only if line and load are in the same box

Not recommended for:

  • Multi-way installations with load and line in separate boxes
  • Applications that exceed the stated load capacity
  • Inductive loads such as motors, fans or pumps

Compatibility with Home Assistant, Homey and Fibaro

Home Assistant : The ZEN57 has excellent Home Assistant support through official Z-Wave JS integration. The device appears as an on/off switch (switch entity). Using advanced parameters, you can separate the switch input from the relay output, allowing them to operate independently. You can even create a child device with a Notification Command Class, similar to the ZEN16/17, for even more automation possibilities. Over-the-air firmware updates are fully supported via Z-Wave JS.

Homey : The ZEN57 works with Homey Pro (2023) via native Z-Wave support. The device connects as a standard on/off switch. Make sure your Homey firmware is up to date for optimal Z-Wave 800 series support. Z-Wave Long Range functionality relies on Homey Pro support for LR.

Fibaro : The ZEN57 is compatible with Fibaro Home Center 3 or later via Z-Wave. The device appears as a binary switch. Advanced parameters for separating input and output may be available through the Fibaro interface, depending on the implementation.

Advanced features via Z-Wave parameters

  • Input/Output Separation : Use parameters to separate the switch input from the relay output
  • Child device : Create a second device entity via Notification Command Class for advanced scenes
  • Auto turn-off timer : Set the relay to automatically turn off after X seconds/minutes
  • LED indicator : Configure status LED behavior
  • Power-on state : Determine relay status after power failure (last state, always on, always off)

Installation instructions

Safety first: Always turn off the power at the fuse box before starting. Follow all local electrical codes.

Basic wiring:

  1. LINE (L) → Connect to the phase wire (black/brown)
  2. NEUTRAL (N) → Connect to the neutral wire (white/blue)
  3. LOAD → Connect to the load (lamp, device)
  4. Pigtail wires → Connect to switch (dry contact, no voltage)

Z-Wave pairing:

  1. Set your Z-Wave controller to inclusion mode

Practical examples of automation

Hallway/staircase lighting : Install the ZEN57 behind an existing switch and maintain manual control. Using Home Assistant, you can create an automation that dims the lights at night by disconnecting the input from the output and controlling an external dimmer.

Hard-to-reach fixtures : Place the ZEN57 directly next to a ceiling light in a high-ceilinged room. Use the dry contact input to connect a wireless Z-Wave switch (such as the Zooz ZEN37 Wall Remote) without running new wiring to the wall.

Scene control : Disconnect the switch input from the relay output. Use the physical switch as a scene trigger (e.g., press twice for movie mode), while the relay can be controlled independently via automations.

Holiday mode : Program random on/off times for different lights to simulate presence, even when you're far from home thanks to the reliable Z-Wave Long Range connection.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the difference between wet contact and dry contact relay?

A wet contact relay (such as the ZEN57) carries mains voltage on its output – the LINE wire is physically switched to the LOAD. A dry contact relay (such as the ZEN51) has no voltage on its relay contacts and acts as an isolated switch. Wet contact is fine for most lighting applications, but dry contact offers more flexibility for complex multi-way installations.

Can I use the ZEN57 for 3-way switch installations?

Only if the line and load are in the same box . For traditional 3-way installations with separate boxes, the ZEN51 with dry contact relay is a better choice.

Does Z-Wave Long Range work with every hub?

No, your hub must explicitly support Z-Wave Long Range. Home Assistant with a Z-Wave 800 series USB drive (such as the Zooz ZST39) fully supports Long Range. Check your hub's specifications.

How many LED lamps can I connect to 240V?

A maximum of 300W of LED lighting at 240V. This translates to approximately 20-30 modern LED bulbs of 10-15W each. Always include the inrush current – some LEDs have high peaks.

Can I connect a fan?

No, the ZEN57 has a 5A resistive relay and does not support inductive loads such as fans or motors. Use the Zooz ZEN16 Multirelay for this, or for heavy-duty applications, the ZEN78 High Power Relay.

Does the ZEN57 fit in every standard flush-mounted box?

Yes, with dimensions of only 30 x 25 x 15 mm, the ZEN57 fits in almost any European flush-mounted box, even shallow boxes of 40 mm deep. This is one of the smallest Z-Wave relays on the market.

What happens in case of a power outage?

Z-Wave parameters allow you to configure whether the relay returns to its last state, remains on, or remains off after power is restored. The default is usually "last state."

Can I use the ZEN57 outdoors?

No, the ZEN57 is only suitable for dry indoor locations . For outdoor applications, choose the Zooz ZEN14 Outdoor Double Plug or ZEN15 Power Switch with a weatherproof housing.

Does the ZEN57 support energy monitoring?
