Description
π― Four Sensors. One Compact Device.
Imagine walking into your living room in the evening and the lights automatically dim, while your smart home alerts you to air quality concerns. That's the power of the THIRDREALITY Smart Presence Sensor R3 β a 4-in-1 Zigbee multi-sensor that combines presence detection, air quality monitoring, a light sensor, and an RGB night light in one stylish device.
Traditional motion sensors only detect movement. The R3 goes further: thanks to 60GHz mmWave radar technology, it also detects small, subtle presencesβeven if you're sitting still on the couch or working quietly at your desk. And because the R3 is USB-C powered, you'll never have to replace batteries.
β Key Features & Benefits
- 60GHz mmWave Radar β Accurate presence detection, even with small movements (breathing, sitting still)
- TVOC Air Quality Sensor β Measures volatile organic compounds (VOC) in ppb for a healthier indoor climate
- Illumination sensor (Lux) β Measures ambient brightness for light-controlled automations
- Built-in RGB Night Light β Adjustable color and brightness, including smooth soft dim and color loop effect
- USB-C Powered β Always power, never replace batteries; 60cm white USB-C cable included
- Zigbee 3.0 β Stable, energy-efficient connection with low latency
- Extensive ZHA & Zigbee2MQTT integration β Full local operation in Home Assistant without cloud
- OTA updates β Over-the-air firmware updates regularly add new features; check for updates immediately after installation
π Compatibility
| Platform | Support |
|---|---|
| Home Assistant | β Complete (via Zigbee2MQTT & ZHA) |
| Homey / Homey Pro | β Supported |
| SmartThings | β Supported |
| Amazon Alexa | β (Zigbee hub required) |
| Apple HomeKit | β Via ThirdReality Smart Bridge MZ1 |
| Google Home | β Via ThirdReality Smart Bridge MZ1 |
π Practical Example: Smart Living Room Automation
- The R3 detects your presence via its 60GHz radar β even when youβre just sitting on the couch.
- The light sensor measures that it is getting dark outside.
- The smart lights automatically turn on at 40% brightness.
- If the TVOC level rises, Home Assistant sends a notification and automatically opens the smart window or ventilation grille.
- Leaving the room? All the lights go offβno need to press a button.
π₯οΈ Home Assistant: ZHA vs. Zigbee2MQTT
| Entity | ZHA | Zigbee2MQTT |
|---|---|---|
| RGB night light (on/off, dim, color XY) | β | β |
| Occupation (10s cooldown) | β | β (+ no_occupancy_since timer) |
| Lux / illumination sensor | β | β (+ calibration offset) |
| TVOC air quality (ppb) | β Not yet | β |
| Soft dim (transition in ms) | β | β |
| Switch-on level / start level | β | β |
| Color temperature at startup | β | β |
| Startup Behavior (Off/On/Switch/Last) | β | β |
| Color loop effect | β | β |
| Extra light effects (blink, breatheβ¦) | β | β (8 effects) |
π‘ Tip: Want to see the TVOC measurement in Home Assistant ? Use Zigbee2MQTT. The TVOC value isn't yet available via ZHA, but it may become available in the future via a quirk or firmware update.

β οΈ Point of attention
The sensor requires a Zigbee hub or coordinator. We recommend the ThirdReality Smart Bridge MZ1 for use with Apple HomeKit, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa. For advanced local automation, combine the sensor with Home Assistant or Homey Pro . Note: The TVOC measurement is currently only visible via Zigbee2MQTT, not ZHA.
β Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
- What is the difference with a regular motion sensor?
- A PIR sensor only detects motion. The R3 uses 60GHz mmWave radar and also detects silent presenceβsuch as someone working or sleeping.
- Does the R3 require batteries?
- No! The R3 runs on USB-C power. A white 60cm USB-C cable is included in the box, so you never have to replace batteries.
- Are all sensors visible in Home Assistant?
- That depends on your integration method. All entities are available via Zigbee 2MQTT : presence, lux, TVOC (ppb), RGB night light, light effects, and startup behavior. Night light, occupancy, lux, soft dim, color loop, levels, and startup behavior are available via ZHA . The TVOC value isn't yet displayed in ZHA, but this may be added in the future via a quirk or firmware update. Check out our Home Assistant range for compatible coordinators.
- What exactly does the TVOC sensor measure?
- TVOC stands for Total Volatile Organic Compounds β volatile organic compounds such as those found in cleaning products, paint, or cooking. A high value indicates poor air quality and can trigger automations in Home Assistant or Homey . The value is available in ppb via Zigbee 2MQTT.
- What are the additional features of Zigbee2MQTT?
- In addition to TVOC measurement, Zigbee2MQTT offers: lux sensor calibration, an adjustable
no_occupancy_sincetimer and eight lighting effects includingblink,breathe,colorloopandstop_colorloop. - What does the soft dim function do?
- With soft dim, the night light fades smoothly on and off instead of switching on and off instantly. The transition speed is freely adjustable in milliseconds, for a pleasant ambient lighting effect without harsh transitions.
- What does the night light do after a power outage?
- The Startup Behavior setting allows you to choose from four options: Off (light stays off), On (light always turns on), Toggle (reverse state), or Last Known Value (resumes the state before the interruption).
- Which hub do I need?
- For Apple HomeKit, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa , we recommend the ThirdReality Smart Bridge MZ1 . For Home Assistant or Homey , you can also use a Zigbee USB coordinator.
- Do I need to do anything after installation?
- Yes, check immediately after the initial installation for firmware updates. Features are regularly improved or expanded via OTA updates β so you always get the most out of your R3.
- Can I combine multiple R3 sensors?
- Yes, Zigbee devices form a mesh network, allowing multiple sensors to amplify range.
