Description

SMLIGHT PoE Extender 1 to 2 – 100 meters extra range

Your PoE switch is too far away for an additional sensor or camera, and there's no power outlet nearby. The SMLIGHT PoE Extender solves this problem: it extends your Ethernet and PoE connection by up to 100 meters and simultaneously splits that line to two output ports. No extra power adapter needed, no configuration required — just plug and play.

Power and connectivity

The extender operates completely passively: it receives power via the PoE input and distributes it to the two output ports. Input power is a maximum of 13W (IEEE 802.3af); combined output power is a maximum of 12.2W across both ports together. The Ethernet speed is 10/100 Mbps on all ports. Auto-sensing ensures that connected devices are safely recognized without manual setup.

Connecting

Connect the PoE IN port to your PoE switch or PoE injector. Then connect up to two PoE devices to the output ports. No app, no configuration screen, and no external power supply are needed. Use at least Cat5e for the full 100-meter range.

Expansion and accessories

The extender pairs well with SMLIGHT SLZB dongles as a Zigbee coordinator in a hard-to-reach location, the Apollo Automation R PRO-1 as a PoE mmWave presence sensor, or the Sensy E1 Pro Multi-Sense as an environmental sensor. It can also be used in combination with PoE IP cameras in your security setup. If you need multiple extenders for a longer chain, they can be daisy-chained.

Safety and reliability

The extender has built-in protection against power surges and incorrect connection (reverse wiring protection). The housing is compact ABS, fanless, and suitable for use from -10°C to 50°C. Humidity: 10%–90% non-condensing.

Home Assistant

The PoE extender does not have its own HA integration; it is a passive network device. Which entities and integration you get depends on the connected device:

  • SMLIGHT SLZB dongle: detectable via the SMLIGHT SLZB integration, fully local without cloud. Connect via ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT to the serial port over the network.
  • Apollo Automation R PRO-1: via ESPHome integration. Entities: presence detection, distance, motion zone, RSSI.
  • Sensy E1 Pro Multi-Sense: via ESPHome or custom integration. Entities: temperature, humidity, CO², presence.
  • IP camera: via ONVIF or manufacturer-specific integration, including Frigate NVR support.

Pairing procedure for SMLIGHT SLZB dongle via extender

  • Connect the extender's PoE IN port to your PoE switch or PoE injector.
  • Connect the SLZB dongle to one of the two PoE OUT ports using an 8-wire Cat5e cable.
  • Wait for the dongle to obtain an IP address via DHCP.
  • In HA, go to Settings > Devices & services > Add integration > SMLIGHT SLZB and enter the IP address.
  • Connect ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT to the dongle's serial port over the network.

Points to consider

  • Combined output power is a maximum of 12.2W; distribute this across two devices (e.g., 2x 6W).
  • Ethernet speed is a maximum of 100 Mbps; Gigabit is not supported.
  • Use at least Cat5e for the full 100-meter range.
  • The extender only works with IEEE 802.3af-compliant devices at the input; passive PoE injectors do not work.
  • Daisy-chaining is possible, but each extension segment consumes a portion of the available power.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an additional power adapter?

No. The extender is fully powered via the incoming PoE line from your switch or injector. No separate power outlet or adapter is needed.

How many devices can I connect?

The extender has two output ports. You can connect two IEEE 802.3af-compatible devices simultaneously, as long as the combined power remains below 12.2W. For example, an Apollo R PRO-1 and an SLZB dongle can be combined well within this limit.

Does the extender also work with the Sensy E1 Pro or Apollo R PRO-1?

Yes, both the Sensy E1 Pro Multi-Sense and the Apollo Automation R PRO-1 support IEEE 802.3af PoE and are compatible with this extender. This is useful if you want to place them in a location where there is no power outlet or switch nearby.

Can I daisy-chain multiple extenders?

Yes, that is possible. Each additional segment extends the range by up to 100 meters. However, keep in mind the available power: each extender consumes a small portion of the PoE capacity. Check that the total power of all connected devices falls within the limits of your PoE source.

What kind of cable do I need?

Use at least Cat5e. For the maximum range of 100 meters per segment, Cat5e or Cat6 is highly recommended. A 4-wire cable is not suitable for PoE.

Does this work with Home Assistant?

The extender itself has no HA integration. You connect the connected device via its corresponding integration: SMLIGHT SLZB for dongles, ESPHome for Apollo and Sensy sensors, or ONVIF for IP cameras. Everything works completely locally. View the Home Assistant collection for suitable hardware.
