5-Channel S0 Pulse Meter on USB: Razor-Sharp Submetering for Your Smart Home
In Dutch and Belgian homes, the smart meter (via the P1 port) only shows the total grid consumption. Do you want to know exactly how much electricity your heat pump consumes, how much gross electricity your solar panels generate, or how many liters of water flow through the pipes? With this 5-channel S0 Pulse Meter on USB developed by RFXCOM, you can connect up to 5 physical S0 pulse sources and sub-meters directly to your Home Assistant server or Domoticz system.
💡 The power of hardware-based S0 pulses: S0 pulse signals (according to DIN 43864 standard) are generated directly by the internal meter hardware. This is 100% reliable, real-time, and completely independent of cloud APIs, Wi-Fi, or manufacturer updates.
Specifically Optimized for European Submetering (NL / BE / EU)
The module is the ideal bridge between standard DIN-rail sub-meters in your distribution board and your home automation system:
- Heat Pumps & Air Conditioners (NL/BE Energy Transition): Connect the S0 output of a DIN-rail kWh meter (such as an Eastron SDM120 or Finder meter) for your heat pump to Channel 1. This allows you to calculate your exact daily COP and power consumption in Home Assistant.
- Gross Solar Power Yield: Fixed inverters or micro-inverters (such as Enphase or Hoymiles) often show delayed cloud data. An S0-kWh meter provides your gross production directly and without delay.
- EV Charging Stations & Home Batteries: Accurately record the number of kilowatt-hours charged by your electric car or the charge/discharge cycles of your battery system.
- Water Meters & Gas Sub-Meters: Connect a pulse contact (reed sensor on, among others, Elster, Itron, or Sensus water meters) to track your exact water consumption in liters per minute.
- District Heating & Heat Meters: Suitable for reading pulse signals from GJ/kWh heat meters (such as Kamstrup Multical with S0 pulse output).
Why this 5-channel USB module is indispensable
- 5 Inputs via 1 USB Port: Save valuable USB ports on your Raspberry Pi or Thin Client. One module processes 5 independent pulse channels.
- No External Power Supply Needed: The module draws its operating voltage (5V) directly from the USB port of your host system. For your Raspberry Pi, use a stable power supply such as our 27W USB-C PD Power Supply.
- Plug & Play Recognition: Appears as a serial USB-COM port and is directly supported by Domoticz (native S0 pulse counter) and Home Assistant (100% via custom integrations or ESPHome/DSMR-related scripts).
Compatibility
This S0 Pulse Meter can be perfectly combined with various smart home platforms and network equipment:
- ✅ Home Assistant (Core / Container / OS via USB-passthrough)
- ✅ Domoticz (Built-in S0 pulse hardware support)
- ✅ Raspberry Pi 3, 4 and 5 & Linux Mini-PCs (Intel NUC, Thin Clients, Synology)
- ✅ Works perfectly with all standard DIN 43864 potential-free S0 pulse outputs (optocouplers / reed contacts)
- ✅ Excellent addition to RFXCOM transceivers for a complete sensor and energy monitoring setup.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is this a replacement for the P1 cable of my smart meter?
No, it's an addition! The P1 cable reads the main meter of your grid operator (Liander, Enexis, Stedin, Fluvius). This 5-channel S0 module reads sub-meters that you have installed yourself in the meter cupboard or distribution board (such as a kWh meter for your heat pump, solar panels, or charging station).
How does the module know what 1 pulse means?
The module counts the physical pulses. In Home Assistant or Domoticz, you simply set the pulse factor of your meter (e.g., 1000 pulses = 1 kWh, or 1 pulse = 1 liter of water). The software automatically converts this to exact consumption and power (Watts/Liters per minute).
Can I connect any kWh meter to this?
As long as the kWh meter has an S0 pulse output (identifiable by the 'S0+' and 'S0-' terminals on the meter, virtually standard on all DIN-rail meters such as Eastron, Finder, and Eltako), you can connect it directly.
