Description
No neutral wire in your flush-mounted box? No problem at all.
In many Dutch homes, especially in older buildings, there is no neutral wire (N) present behind the wall switch. Most smart in-wall switches then won't work. The SONOFF ZBMINIL2 Zigbee MINI Extreme is specially designed for this situation: it works with just two wires (L in and L out) and makes any ordinary switch smart – without demolition, without extra wiring.
⚡ Ultra compact – fits in almost any flush-mounted box
With dimensions of only 39.5 × 32 × 18.4mm, the ZBMINIL2 is 40% smaller than its predecessor ZBMINIL. A minimum depth of 47mm is recommended for comfortable installation. The relay switches up to 6A / 1500W – ideal for lighting.
⚠️ No neutral wire – but a minimum load of 3W
Since the ZBMINIL2 does not have a neutral wire, it draws a small amount of current through the load. This requires a minimum load of 3W:
- Minimum 3W LED lighting required
- LED maximum: 150W @ 100V / 300W @ 240V
- Not suitable for inductive loads such as fans or motors
- For flickering lights: a bypass module can help
⚠️ ZBMINIL2 is a Zigbee End-Device – NOT a router
The ZBMINIL2 is a Zigbee End-Device and does not function as a Zigbee router. It therefore does not amplify the Zigbee network. In large homes or with many Zigbee devices, it is advisable to include Zigbee routers (such as the ZBMINIR2) in the network.
🔀 Supports multiple switch types
- Toggle switch (factory settings)
- Push button (momentary)
- Two-way switch (SPDT – two-way control, e.g., staircase lighting)
Easily switch between switch types by pressing the button 3 times briefly.
🛠️ Smart functions
- Timer Schedule: switch on/off at fixed times
- Countdown timer: automatic shutdown after adjustable time
- Loop timer: repeating on/off cycles
- Power-on State: adjustable behavior after power interruption
- Smart scenes: link with other Zigbee devices
- Local Zigbee scenes: also works without an internet connection
⚠️ Please note: The ZBMINIL2 does not have a Detach Relay Mode. When using smart lamps that need to be continuously powered, the ZBMINIR2 is a better choice.
🔗 Broadly compatible with popular smart home platforms
- Recommended SONOFF hubs: ZBBridge-P, NSPanel Pro, iHost, ZBBridge-U
- Other SONOFF hubs: ZBDongle-P, ZBDongle-E
- Amazon: Echo Plus 2nd Gen, Echo Show 2nd Gen, Echo 4th Gen
- Home Assistant: via Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA
- All other gateways that support Zigbee 3.0
🏠 Local scenes – even without internet
The ZBMINIL2 supports local Zigbee scenes. Automations remain active even if your WiFi or internet connection goes down.
⚠️ Safety Warning
The ZBMINIL2 operates on 230V AC current and must be installed by a certified electrician. Ensure that a 6A MCB or RCD (RCBO) is present before the ZBMINIL2. Never connect the S1/S2 terminals to the neutral or earth wire.
💡 Example automations
- 🪜 Staircase lighting: two-way switches upstairs and downstairs → both control the same lamp.
- ⏰ Bathroom light: after switching off, stays on for 10 minutes via countdown timer.
- 🌙 Bedroom lamp: light turns off automatically after 30 minutes.
- 🏠 Leaving home: turn off all relays via one scene in Home Assistant.
- 💡 Outdoor lighting: automatically turns on at sunset via motion sensor.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How do I know if I have a neutral wire?
Turn off the power via the meter box and open the flush-mounted box. If there are only two wires (phase in/out), there is no neutral wire – the ZBMINIL2 is then the right choice. Have this checked by a certified electrician.
Does the ZBMINIL2 work with every LED lamp?
For LED lamps above 3W, it usually works well. If flickering occurs, a bypass module can help.
Can I use the ZBMINIL2 with smart lamps?
Not ideal – no Detach Relay Mode. Choose the ZBMINIR2 when using smart lamps.
Does it work with Home Assistant?
Yes, via Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA.
Can I install the ZBMINIL2 myself?
No, installation by a certified electrician is required (230V AC current).
How do I reset the ZBMINIL2?
Press and hold the button for 5 seconds or press the external switch 10 times quickly.
Is the ZBMINIL2 a Zigbee router?
No, it is an End-Device. For network amplifying function, choose the ZBMINIR2.
