Description

Dongle in the ideal spot, antenna pointing straight up

The position of your Zigbee or Z-Wave dongle directly impacts the range of your wireless network. A dongle inserted sideways into a server or hub has suboptimal antenna orientation. This 150 cm USB 2.0 extension cable features a standing dock with an upward-facing connector, allowing your dongle to stand upright with its antenna oriented vertically for maximum range.

The built-in ferrite core filters high-frequency noise on the cable. Combined with the USB 2.0 standard, which does not cause interference in the 2.4GHz spectrum as USB 3.0 does, this provides the most stable connection for your Zigbee controller or Z-Wave controller.

An alternative is the SONOFF USB extension cable. The difference is the dock: the SONOFF one has a flat female connector, while this version has a standing dock so the dongle points vertically upwards instead of horizontally.

Why USB 2.0 and not USB 3.0

USB 3.0 produces unwanted broadband noise in the 2.4GHz spectrum, precisely the frequency at which Zigbee and Z-Wave operate. In practice, a USB 3.0 cable or hub next to a Zigbee dongle results in increased packet loss and unstable device connections. USB 2.0 does not have this problem and provides ample bandwidth at 480 Mbps for any dongle.

Power and connectivity

The cable has a USB 2.0 Type-A male connector on the server side and an upright USB 2.0 Type-A female port in the dock on the dongle side. Compatible with USB 1.1 and USB 2.0. No external power or driver required, plug-and-play on any operating system.

Home Assistant

In Home Assistant, the extension cable works completely transparently: the connected dongle appears on the usual device path as if it were plugged directly into the server. Step by step:

  1. Connect the extension cable to a USB port on your Home Assistant server.
  2. Insert your Zigbee or Z-Wave dongle into the standing dock and position the dock centrally in the room, with the antenna vertically upwards.
  3. Home Assistant will recognize the dongle on the usual path, for example, /dev/ttyUSB0 or /dev/ttyACM0.
  4. Configure ZHA, Zigbee2MQTT, or Z-Wave JS with the correct device path as usual.

Tip: Use fixed device names via the /dev/serial/by-id/ path so that the dongle is always available at the same address after a restart, regardless of the recognition order.

Automation examples

Example 1: Improve range through optimal placement

  1. Connect the extension cable to your server and place the dock in an elevated, central position in the room.
  2. Insert your Zigbee dongle into the dock, antenna pointing straight up.
  3. Open Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA and check the LQI (link quality) values of your devices.
  4. Compare the values with the previous setup: in most cases, the LQI increases significantly with vertical antenna orientation.
  5. Result: more stable connections and fewer dropouts at the edge of your network.

Example 2: Moving dongle away from USB 3.0 interference

  1. Connect the extension cable to a USB 2.0 port on your server or to a USB 2.0 hub.
  2. Move the dock at least 30 cm away from the server, SSD, and other USB 3.0 devices.
  3. Check the error logs in Zigbee2MQTT: fewer CRC errors and timeouts confirm that interference has been reduced.
  4. Result: more stable Zigbee communication without hardware changes to your network.

Points to consider

  • USB 2.0 maximum 480 Mbps: more than sufficient for dongles, not intended for high-speed data transfer or device charging.
  • No active amplification: the cable does not actively extend the dongle's range but improves reception through better antenna orientation and less interference.
  • Cable length is 150 cm, permanently attached to the dock.
  • Only suitable for passive devices such as dongles, no power supply for USB drives or smartphones.

Frequently asked questions

Why is antenna orientation important for a Zigbee dongle?

Zigbee antennas emit the strongest signal perpendicular to the antenna direction. A dongle inserted horizontally into a server primarily transmits upwards and downwards, not to the sides where your devices are located. Placed vertically via this dock, you achieve the largest horizontal plane in your home, precisely where your sensors and switches are located.

What does the ferrite core do?

A ferrite core suppresses high-frequency noise on the cable that can originate from the server or power adapter. This reduces the chance of false triggers or communication errors with sensitive dongles.

What is the difference with the SONOFF USB extension cable?

The SONOFF USB extension cable has a flat female connector at the end of the cable. This version has a standing dock with an upward-facing connector, so the dongle points vertically upwards without an extra bracket or tape.

Does this cable also work with a Bluetooth adapter or other dongles?

Yes. Any USB 2.0 Type-A dongle or adapter works with this cable, including Bluetooth adapters, USB Wi-Fi adapters, and other passive USB devices.

Can I combine this cable with a USB 2.0 hub?

Yes. Combine the extension cable with a Zigbee dongle and connect the cable to a USB 2.0 hub if your server does not have free USB ports. Avoid USB 3.0 hubs due to 2.4GHz interference.

Is the cable also suitable for outdoor use?

No, the cable and dock are intended for indoor use and are not weather-resistant.

Immediately available and connected to your Home Assistant server within a minute.
