Troubleshooting a complete wall switch
Many homeowners want smart dimming but fear the complexity of a loose module in the flush-mounted box, loose wires, and an existing switch that no longer fits. The Sonoff Orb-DIM solves this as one complete wall switch: the dimmed output, the wireless radio, the MCU, and the physical switch faceplate are all housed in an 86 x 86 mm casing that fits a standard EU flush-mounted box. You remove your old switch, connect L, N, Lout, and optionally the two-wire changeover switch (S1/S2), and you're done. The faceplate is mechanically pushable (rocker switch principle): short press = on/off, hold = dim. Thanks to Matter over WiFi, it works directly with Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, and Home Assistant – no hub, no bridge, no cloud dependency for local use.
Power and connectivity
The Orb-DIM operates on 220-240 V~ 50 Hz (single-phase grid) and requires a neutral wire in the flush-mounted box. Maximum load: 400 W resistive / 200 VA LED / 200 W dimmable electronic transformer (max 1.6 A). Connections: L, N, Lout (load) and S1, S2 (potential-free contacts for additional wall switches/push buttons in 1-way or 2-way). The module communicates via Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz (IEEE 802.11 b/g/n) with Matter-over-WiFi certification. No Thread Border Router needed - connects directly to Wi-Fi and Matter-fabric. MCU: ESP32-C3 for fast response, OTA updates, and local LAN control (even without internet). On the module (behind the faceplate) there is a physical button for pairing (5s), switching mode (3x), and factory reset (10s). The faceplate provides tactile feedback with every operation.
Functionality and settings
Dimming technology: Trailing-edge (phase-cut) with support for leading-edge for specific loads - automatically detected during calibration.
Supported loads:
- Dimmable LED: up to 200 VA
- Incandescent / halogen lamps: up to 400 W
- Dimmable electronic transformers: up to 200 W
Calibration: Automatic (on first power-up or manually via app/button) and manual (min/max brightness adjustable by 1%). The module measures the actual dimming range of the connected lamp and eliminates flicker, dead zones, and instability. Result: flicker-free dimming 0-100% in 1% steps.
Real-time measurement: Power (W), voltage (V), current (A), energy (kWh cumulative) - visible in eWeLink, Matter apps, and Home Assistant.
Operation via faceplate (mechanical):
- Short press: on/off toggle
- Hold: dim up/down (direction changes on next hold)
- Status LED on the faceplate shows on/off/network status
External switch support (S1/S2):
- Single rocker switch (1-way): toggle on/off
- Single push button (1-way momentary): short press = on/off, long = dim (alternating)
- Two push buttons (2-way): S1 on/brighter, S2 off/dimmer
- Switch type adjustable via module button (3x press = next mode) or via eWeLink app / Matter attributes
Power-on state: Adjustable (off / on / toggle / previous state).
Protection: Overload, overvoltage, overcurrent, overheating (NTC sensor) - all with automatic shutdown and notification.
Fade/transition: Configurable transition times (0-65535 sec) for smooth animations.
Expansion and accessories
The Orb-DIM is self-contained and complete - no extra module, housing, or adapter needed. The faceplate is detachable (two lift tabs on the side) to access the module button. For additional control points, you can pair wireless Zigbee buttons (Sonoff SNZB-01P, SNZB-04P, Aqara WXKG01LM, Philips Hue Dimmer) via Home Assistant automations. The S1/S2 inputs are open for wired rocker switches or push buttons (e.g., on the landing or bedside). For Zigbee networks, we recommend a Zigbee USB controller.
Safety and reliability
- PC V0 housing (flame retardant, UL94 V-0)
- CE / RoHS certified
- Multi-level protection: overload, overvoltage, overcurrent, overheating (NTC)
- Automatic shutdown + notification in case of fault conditions
- IP20 (indoor use only, dry environment)

Frequently asked questions
How do I pair the Sonoff Orb-DIM to Home Assistant?
Install the Matter integration in Home Assistant, open the Companion App, put the Orb-DIM into pairing mode (press and hold the module button behind the faceplate for 5-10 seconds until the LED flashes), scan the QR code, and add it to Home Assistant. See the detailed steps in the Home Assistant section.
Is a hub or bridge required?
No. The Orb-DIM uses Matter over WiFi and connects directly to your Wi-Fi network. No Zigbee hub, Thread Border Router, or Sonoff bridge is needed. However, a Matter controller (Home Assistant, Homey Pro, Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings) is required.
What is the difference with the MINI-DIM module?
The MINI-DIM is a loose flush-mounted module (45 x 39.4 x 16.8 mm) that fits behind an existing switch. The Orb-DIM is a complete wall switch (86 x 86 x 33.7 mm) with an integrated physical faceplate - you replace your old switch 1-to-1. Functionally identical (Matter/WiFi, trailing-edge, energy measurement, calibration), but a different form factor.
Are batteries included?
No. The Orb-DIM is powered by 230V mains voltage (L + N). There are no batteries in the device, nor are any required.
Can I use the Orb-DIM in a 2-way circuit (changeover switch)?
Yes. The S1/S2 inputs support a second rocker switch or push button for 2-way operation. The Orb-DIM itself acts as the main switch (master), the extra switch on S1/S2 as a slave. Configure the switch type via the module button (3x press), eWeLink app, or Matter attributes.
How do I access the module button for pairing/reset?
The faceplate has small lift tabs on two sides. Carefully pry off the faceplate with a flat screwdriver. The module button is on the side of the module. After configuration, press the faceplate back into place until it clicks.
Does the physical faceplate also work if the WiFi/Matter connection is lost?
Yes. The mechanical operation (short press on/off, hold to dim) works locally on the device, even without a network connection. Only app control, automations, and energy data exchange require a network.
What is the mounting depth and will it fit in my box?
The Orb-DIM is 33.7 mm deep (measured from the wall). Standard EU flush-mounted boxes are 40-50 mm deep, so in most cases, it fits well. Do you have a shallow box (e.g., 25-30 mm)? Then check the space behind the cover plate - the connector terminals are on the side and take up extra space.
Can I use the Orb-DIM without a neutral wire?
No. The Orb-DIM requires a neutral wire in the flush-mounted box for powering the electronics. For installations without a neutral wire, no Sonoff dimmer wall switch is available; consider a smart dimmable Zigbee bulb (e.g., Philips Hue) or a no-neutral switch (switching only, no dimming).
