Troubleshooting in a compact module
You want to make your current dimmable lighting smart without replacing wall switches or breaking the aesthetic. The Sonoff MINI-ZBDIM solves this: a miniature Zigbee 3.0 dimmer module that fits into any standard flush-mounted box. Unlike WiFi dimmers, this module acts as a Zigbee router (repeater), strengthening your mesh network and improving the accessibility of other Zigbee devices. With trailing-edge dimming technology, automatic calibration, and real-time power measurement, you get flicker-free control over LED, halogen, and electronic transformers – locally, without the cloud, via Home Assistant (ZHA/Zigbee2MQTT), Sonoff gateways, or any Zigbee 3.0 hub.
Power and connectivity
The MINI-ZBDIM operates on 220-240 V~ 50 Hz and requires a neutral wire in the flush-mounted box. Maximum load: 2 A (400 W resistive / 200 VA LED / 200 W dimmable electronic transformer). Connection via screw terminals (L, N, Lout, S1, S2). The module communicates via Zigbee 3.0 (IEEE 802.15.4) with an EFR32MG21 radio/MCU. Zigbee role: Router - the module repeats signals from other Zigbee devices and strengthens the mesh network. No Thread, no WiFi, no Matter - purely Zigbee 3.0. External switches on S1/S2 (potential-free) support toggle switches and momentary push-buttons in 1-way, 2-way, and 3-way configurations. Switch type is adjustable via a button on the module (3 presses cycle through modes) or via ZHA/Zigbee2MQTT.
Functionality and settings
Dimming technology: Trailing-edge (phase-cut) - standard for modern dimmable LED and electronic transformers.
Supported loads:
- Dimmable LED: up to 200 VA
- Incandescent / halogen lamps: up to 400 W
- Dimmable electronic transformers: up to 200 W
Calibration: Automatic (long press on module button or via app) and manual. The module measures the actual dimming range of the connected lamp and precisely sets min/max brightness for flicker-free dimming 0-100%.
Real-time measurement: Power (W), voltage (V), current (A), energy (kWh cumulative) - all available as Zigbee clusters/entities.
External switch modes (configurable):
- Mode 1 (Pulse/Single Push-button): Short press = on/off, press and hold = dimming (alternating)
- Mode 2 (Edge/Single Toggle Switch): Toggle behavior
- Mode 3 (Double Pulse/Double Push-button): S1 short = on / long = brighter; S2 short = off / long = dimmer
- Mode 4 (Triple Pulse/Triple Push-button): S1 = step brighter, middle = on/off, S2 = step dimmer
Power-on state: Adjustable (off / on / toggle / previous state / restore after calibration).
Overheating protection: Built-in NTC sensor automatically switches off output in case of over-temperature and sends a warning to the hub/app.
Soft-start / fade transitions: Configurable transition times (0-65535 sec via Zigbee cluster).
Expansion and accessories
For a sleek finish, the SONOFF EDIM enclosure is available – specifically designed for MINI-DIM and MINI-ZBDIM. The module itself already acts as a Zigbee router, so extra repeaters are often unnecessary. For coordinating your Zigbee network, we recommend a Zigbee USB controller. Wireless Zigbee buttons (Sonoff SNZB-01P, SNZB-04P, Aqara WXKG01LM, Philips Hue Dimmer) can be paired directly with the hub for additional control points.
Safety and reliability
- PC V0 housing (flame retardant, UL94 V-0)
- CE / RoHS certified
- Overheating protection with automatic shutdown and UI warning
- Load detection prevents damage from unsuitable lamps
- IP20 (indoor use only, dry environment)
- Installation by qualified electrician mandatory (230V mains voltage)
Home Assistant integration (ZHA / Zigbee2MQTT)
The MINI-ZBDIM works out-of-the-box with both major Zigbee integrations in Home Assistant.
ZHA (Zigbee Home Automation)
- Ensure a Zigbee coordinator is connected (e.g., Sonoff ZBDongle-E, SkyConnect, Home Assistant Yellow).
- Go to Settings > Devices & Services > ZHA > "Add device".
- Put the MINI-ZBDIM in pairing mode: press and hold the button on the module for 5 seconds until the LED flashes.
- ZHA will find the device, pair it, and assign it to an area.
- Quirk support: Since Home Assistant 2026.6, there is a quirk (PR #4745) that makes all switch modes (Pulse, Edge, Double Pulse, Triple Pulse) and configuration options (min/max brightness, transition time, calibration) directly available in the ZHA UI. Without the quirk: basic on/off/dimming works, advanced settings via Zigbee2MQTT or eWeLink.
Entities after pairing (ZHA)
-
light(state, brightness 0-100%, transition supported) -
sensor.power(W),sensor.voltage(V),sensor.current(A) -
sensor.energy(kWh, cumulative) -
number.min_brightness,number.max_brightness(calibration limits) -
number.transition_time(transition time in seconds) -
select.external_switch_type(Pulse / Edge / Double Pulse / Triple Pulse) -
button.calibration(start calibration) -
switch.overheat_protection(status) -
select.power_on_behavior(off / on / toggle / previous)
Zigbee2MQTT
Supported since version 1.36.x. All the above entities + extra options like state_action for switch events. OTA firmware updates via Zigbee2MQTT OTA functionality. Expose switch_type, min_brightness, max_brightness, transition, power_on_behavior, calibration, overheat_protection.
Local control: Fully local via Zigbee mesh. No internet, no cloud, no Sonoff account required.
Homey integration
Works on Homey Pro (early 2023 or later) and Homey Bridge via the official Sonoff Zigbee app (or generic Zigbee app). Pairing: Homey App > Devices > + > Zigbee > Search devices > press and hold button for 5s. The module acts as a router on Homey Pro (strengthens mesh), on Homey Bridge it acts as an end-device (Bridge is coordinator). All basic functions (on/off, dimming, power measurement) available. Advanced settings (switch type, calibration, min/max, transition time) via Homey settings or Zigbee cluster configuration.

Points of attention and limitations
- Neutral wire required in the flush-mounted box - no "no-neutral" version (that is the ZBMINIL2, but that is a switch, not a dimmer).
- 230V AC only - not suitable for 12V/24V low-voltage systems.
- Maximum 2 A / 400 W - not for fans, motors, or inductive loads without a transformer.
- No WiFi, no Matter, no Thread - purely Zigbee 3.0. Do you need Matter-over-WiFi? Choose the MINI-DIM (sold separately).
- No dry-contact relay - output is phase-cut dimmed, not switching (for switching: ZBMINI R2 or ZBMINIL2).
- Switch type configuration via module button (3 fast presses = next mode) or via ZHA/Zigbee2MQTT. Without quirk in ZHA: basic works, config via Zigbee2MQTT or Sonoff gateway.
- Philips Hue Bridge: works as a light source, but no router function, no advanced config, no OTA updates via Hue.
- 3-way switching (US/UK style): requires an extra wire between switch boxes (live to S2). In NL 2-way installations: use S1 and S2 parallel to the same toggle switch or push buttons.
Box contents
- 1x Sonoff MINI-ZBDIM module (MINI Extreme series)

Frequently asked questions
How do I pair the Sonoff MINI-ZBDIM with Home Assistant?
ZHA: Install ZHA integration, coordinator connected, button pressed for 5s, ZHA searches for device. Zigbee2MQTT: device in pairing mode, permit_join: true, automatically detected. See detailed steps in the Home Assistant section.
Is a hub or bridge required?
Yes. You need a Zigbee 3.0 coordinator (e.g., Sonoff ZBDongle-E, Home Assistant Yellow, SkyConnect, Homey Pro, Sonoff ZBBridge-P, NSPanel Pro, iHost). Without a coordinator, the module will not work.
Does the module act as a Zigbee router (repeater)?
Yes. The MINI-ZBDIM is a Zigbee router and strengthens your mesh network. On Homey Bridge, it acts as an end-device (Bridge is coordinator).
Are batteries included?
No. The module is powered via 230V mains voltage (L + N). There are no batteries in the module and none are needed.
Can I use the MINI-ZBDIM without a neutral wire?
No. The MINI-ZBDIM requires a neutral wire. For installations without a neutral wire, there is the ZBMINIL2 (switch, no dimmer) or consider a smart dimmable Zigbee lamp (e.g., Philips Hue, Gledopto, Sunricher).
What is the difference with the MINI-DIM (Matter-over-WiFi)?
MINI-ZBDIM = Zigbee 3.0, router function, works on Homey Bridge, no internet needed, local via Zigbee mesh. MINI-DIM = Matter-over-WiFi, no router, does not work on Homey Bridge, requires WiFi range, connects directly to Matter controllers (Home Assistant, Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings) without a Zigbee hub. Choose MINI-ZBDIM for robust Zigbee mesh, MINI-DIM for Matter/WiFi simplicity.
How do I configure the switch type (toggle vs push-button)?
On the module: press button 3 times quickly = next mode (LED flashes number of times = mode number). Via ZHA (with quirk): select.external_switch_type. Via Zigbee2MQTT: switch_type payload. Via Sonoff gateway: eWeLink app.
