Description

SMLIGHT SLZB-07MG24 Zigbee USB Coordinator EFR32MG24

A reliable Zigbee coordinator forms the backbone of any local smart home. The SMLIGHT SLZB-07MG24 combines the powerful Silicon Labs EFR32MG24 chip with a built-in +20 dB signal amplifier and an included +3 dB external antenna, in one of the smallest USB dongles on the market with an external antenna. Pre-flashed and ready to use: plug in, pair, and get started with Home Assistant via ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT.

Chipset and hardware

The heart of the SLZB-07MG24 is the Silicon Labs EFR32MG24, the latest generation Zigbee SoC with more memory and processing power than its predecessor EFR32MG21. The USB-to-serial conversion is handled by the CP2102N, a stable and widely supported chip. Thanks to the built-in +20 dB amplifier combined with the included +3 dB SMA antenna, the dongle achieves up to 200 meters in open space. The antenna is rotatable in three directions for optimal placement.

Firmware modes

The SLZB-07MG24 comes pre-flashed as a Zigbee 3.0 coordinator and works directly with Zigbee2MQTT and ZHA. Via the official SMLIGHT web flasher, you can easily switch firmware: in addition to the standard Zigbee coordinator firmware, the dongle also supports OpenThread RCP (Thread Border Router) and MultiPAN RCP (simultaneous Zigbee and Thread). This makes the adapter ready for Matter devices that communicate via Thread. Flashing is done directly via the browser without additional software.

Autoflash and firmware updates

The SLZB-07MG24 features an autoflash mode for the EFR32MG24 chip: connect the dongle to USB and flash directly from the browser without separate programming hardware. Firmware updates for the Zigbee radio can also be performed remotely via the server to which the dongle is connected, which is convenient for installations in hard-to-reach locations. Home Assistant

The SLZB-07MG24 works via Zigbee2MQTT and ZHA, completely local without the cloud. The dongle is pre-flashed and tested; after connection, Home Assistant automatically detects the adapter. Cloud connection is not required.

Pairing procedure via Zigbee2MQTT

  • >Insert the SLZB-07MG24 into a USB port on your Home Assistant server or host. >In HA, go to Settings > Devices & Services > Zigbee2MQTT and add a new coordinator. >Select the serial device; the dongle will appear as CP2102N USB-to-UART Bridge Controller. >Set the baud rate to 921 600 bps and enable hardware flow control. >Zigbee2MQTT recognizes the EFR32MG24 as an EZSP adapter; the network is immediately operational.

Pairing procedure via ZHA

  • >In HA, go to Settings > Devices & Services > ZHA > Add Integration. >Choose Serial for the connection type and select the CP2102N port. >ZHA automatically detects the EFR32MG24; the Zigbee network is active within seconds.

Thread Border Router via OpenThread RCP

  • >Flash the dongle via the official SMLIGHT web flasher with OpenThread RCP firmware. >Install the OpenThread Border Router add-on in Home Assistant. >Select the USB port of the SLZB-07MG24 as the serial device. >The Thread integration will automatically appear in HA; Matter devices can now be paired via Thread.

Other platforms

The SLZB-07MG24 works on any system that supports an EZSP-compatible serial Zigbee coordinator: Home Assistant (ZHA and Zigbee2MQTT), ioBroker, openHAB, Node-RED, and other open-source platforms. Drivers for CP2102N are available for Windows, Linux, macOS, and Raspberry Pi OS.

Automation examples

Example 1 – Keep coordinator live with automatic restart

  • >Use the Zigbee2MQTT Health Check sensor in HA. >Trigger: sensor.zigbee2mqtt_health is unavailable for more than 5 minutes. >Action: restart the Zigbee2MQTT add-on via the HA service call addon.restart and send a push notification "Zigbee2MQTT restart performed."

Example 2 – Automatically activate Thread Border Router upon Matter pairing

  • >Flash the SLZB-07MG24 with MultiPAN RCP firmware for simultaneous Zigbee and Thread. >Add the OpenThread Border Router add-on in HA. >Trigger: a new Matter device registers via the Matter integration. >Action: HA automatically synchronizes the Thread network credentials to your smartphone for easy pairing of Matter-over-Thread devices.

Points of attention

  • >The dongle comes pre-flashed as a Zigbee coordinator; for Thread/Matter, a firmware update via the SMLIGHT web flasher is required. >Hardware flow control is supported and recommended for stable operation with Zigbee2MQTT (baud rate 921 600 bps). >Use a USB extension cable to place the dongle away from the server and avoid interference with USB 3.0 ports on 2.4 GHz. >MultiPAN RCP firmware enables simultaneous Zigbee and Thread but increases network complexity; only use this if you actively want to integrate Matter-over-Thread devices. >Not compatible as a standalone controller without a server; always requires a host device with Zigbee2MQTT, ZHA, or similar platform.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the SLZB-07MG24 and the SLZB-07?

The SLZB-07 uses an EFR32MG21 chip; the SLZB-07MG24 uses the newer EFR32MG24 with more RAM and flash memory. This gives the MG24 more room for larger Zigbee networks and better support for Thread/Matter. View our full Zigbee USB coordinator range for a comparison.

Does the SLZB-07MG24 work directly with Home Assistant without additional configuration?

Yes, the dongle comes pre-flashed as a Zigbee coordinator and is automatically recognized by Home Assistant after connection. Add the ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT integration, select the CP2102N serial port, and the Zigbee network is immediately operational. No manual firmware installation is required.

Can I also use the SLZB-07MG24 as a Thread Border Router for Matter?

Yes, via the official SMLIGHT web flasher, you can flash the dongle with OpenThread RCP or MultiPAN RCP firmware. With MultiPAN RCP, Zigbee and Thread run simultaneously on the same dongle. Then install the OpenThread Border Router add-on in Home Assistant for full Matter-over-Thread support.

Does the SLZB-07MG24 have hardware flow control?

Yes, the SLZB-07MG24 supports hardware flow control via the CP2102N chip. This is the recommended setting when using with Zigbee2MQTT for maximum stability. Also set the baud rate to 921 600 bps for optimal performance.

Should I use a USB extension cable?

A USB extension cable is highly recommended. USB 3.0 ports can produce interfering 2.4 GHz noise that disrupts Zigbee reception. By placing the dongle 30-50 cm away from the server using an extension cable, you significantly improve the stability and range of your Zigbee network.

Does the SLZB-07MG24 work with Homey?

No, the SLZB-07MG24 is a USB Zigbee coordinator intended for platforms like Home Assistant, ioBroker, and openHAB. Homey has its own built-in Zigbee radio and does not work with external USB coordinators. For use with Homey, you do not need a separate coordinator.
