Description

SMLIGHT SLZB-07 Zigbee USB Coordinator EFR32MG21

A reliable Zigbee coordinator forms the backbone of any local smart home. The SMLIGHT SLZB-07 combines the proven Silicon Labs EFR32MG21 chip with a built-in +20 dB signal amplifier and an included +3 dB external antenna, in a compact USB dongle. Pre-flashed and ready to use: plug in, pair, and get started with Home Assistant via ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT.

Chipset and hardware

At the heart of the SLZB-07 is the Silicon Labs EFR32MG21, a widely supported and proven Zigbee SoC. USB-to-serial conversion is handled by the CP2102N, a stable chip with excellent compatibility on Windows, Linux, macOS, and Raspberry Pi OS. Thanks to the built-in +20 dB amplifier combined with the included +3 dB SMA antenna, the dongle achieves a strong signal for large Zigbee networks. The antenna is rotatable for optimal placement next to the server.

Pre-flashed and ready for use

The SLZB-07 comes pre-flashed as a Zigbee 3.0 coordinator and works immediately after connection with Zigbee2MQTT and ZHA. Firmware can be easily updated via the official SMLIGHT web flasher through the browser, without additional programming tools or separate hardware. View the full Zigbee USB coordinator assortment for more options.

Home Assistant

The SLZB-07 works via Zigbee2MQTT and ZHA, completely locally without a cloud connection. The dongle is pre-flashed and tested; after connection, Home Assistant automatically detects the adapter as an EZSP-compatible coordinator. Cloud connection is not required.

Pairing procedure via Zigbee2MQTT

  • Plug the SLZB-07 into a USB port on your Home Assistant server or host.
  • In HA, go to Settings > Devices & Services > Zigbee2MQTT and add a new coordinator.
  • Select the serial device; the dongle will appear as CP2102N USB-to-UART Bridge Controller.
  • Set the baud rate to 115 200 bps.
  • Zigbee2MQTT will recognize the EFR32MG21 as an EZSP adapter; the network will be operational immediately.

Pairing procedure via ZHA

  • In HA, go to Settings > Devices & Services > ZHA > Add integration.
  • Choose Serial for the connection type and select the CP2102N port.
  • ZHA will automatically detect the EFR32MG21 as an EZSP coordinator; the Zigbee network will be active within seconds.

Other platforms

The SLZB-07 works on any system that supports an EZSP-compatible serial Zigbee coordinator: Home Assistant (ZHA and Zigbee2MQTT), ioBroker, openHAB, Node-RED, and other open-source platforms. Drivers for CP2102N are available for Windows, Linux, macOS, and Raspberry Pi OS.

Automation examples

Example 1 – Monitor coordinator with automatic restart

  • Use the Zigbee2MQTT Health Check sensor in HA.
  • Trigger: sensor.zigbee2mqtt_health has been unavailable for more than 5 minutes.
  • Action: restart the Zigbee2MQTT add-on via the HA service call addon.restart and send a push notification "Zigbee2MQTT restart performed."

Example 2 – Track network quality and signal weak devices

  • Use the linkquality entities from Zigbee2MQTT for all paired devices.
  • Trigger: sensor.devicename_linkquality drops below value 30 and stays there for more than 30 minutes.
  • Action: send push notification "Weak Zigbee signal detected at [device name], consider adding a router device."

Points to consider

  • The dongle is pre-flashed as a Zigbee coordinator; firmware updates are done via the SMLIGHT web flasher in the browser without additional hardware.
  • Use a USB extension cable to avoid interference with USB 3.0 ports at 2.4 GHz; place the dongle at least 30 cm from the server.
  • Not compatible as a standalone controller without a server; always requires a host device with Zigbee2MQTT, ZHA, or a similar platform.
  • For Thread/Matter support and larger memory, the SLZB-07MG24 with EFR32MG24 is the designated successor.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the SLZB-07 and the SLZB-07MG24?

The SLZB-07 uses the EFR32MG21 chip; the SLZB-07MG24 uses the newer EFR32MG24 with more RAM and flash memory, higher baud rate (921 600 bps), hardware flow control, and support for Thread/Matter via firmware update. For new installations, the MG24 is the recommended choice.

Does the SLZB-07 work directly with Home Assistant without extra configuration?

Yes, the dongle is pre-flashed as a Zigbee coordinator and is automatically recognized by Home Assistant after connection. Add the ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT integration, select the CP2102N serial port, and the Zigbee network will be operational immediately. No manual firmware installation is required.

How many Zigbee devices does the SLZB-07 support?

The EFR32MG21 supports Zigbee networks with tens to hundreds of devices, depending on the mix of routers and end devices. Routers (mains-powered devices such as smart plugs) strengthen the network and increase the maximum capacity.

Do I need to use a USB extension cable?

A USB extension cable is highly recommended. USB 3.0 ports can produce interfering 2.4 GHz noise that disrupts Zigbee reception. By placing the dongle 30-50 cm from the server via an extension cable, you significantly improve the stability and range of your Zigbee network.

Does the SLZB-07 work with Homey?

No, the SLZB-07 is a USB Zigbee coordinator intended for platforms like Home Assistant, ioBroker, and openHAB. Homey has its own built-in Zigbee radio and does not work with external USB coordinators. For use with Homey, you do not need a separate coordinator.

Can I perform firmware updates without removing the dongle?

Yes, firmware updates for the EFR32MG21 radio can be performed via the official SMLIGHT web flasher in the browser, without removing the dongle or using separate programming hardware. Connect the web flasher to the dongle's serial port and follow the on-screen steps.
