Description

💡 End to flickering and glowing LED lights

Do you know that annoying flickering or glowing of LED lights after you've turned off the light? This is a common problem with modern energy-efficient lighting in combination with a dimmer or switch without a neutral wire. The Shelly Bypass is the simple, compact solution that definitively resolves this problem — quickly installed and hardly visible behind your light point.

How does the Shelly Bypass work?

Without a neutral wire in the installation, a small amount of residual current always flows through the lamp, even when it is "off." This causes the familiar flickering or glowing. The Shelly Bypass diverts this residual current, so your dimmer or switch functions correctly and your lights are truly off when you want them to be.

Compatibility & load limits

The Shelly Bypass (S-Byp) is compatible with:

  • Shelly Dimmer 2 – use the Bypass with a total lamp load of less than approx. 10W
  • Shelly 1L (original, not Gen3) – use the Bypass with a total lamp load of less than approx. 20W

⚠️ Please note – installation without neutral wire: The Bypass is only necessary for installations without a neutral wire. If you have an installation with a neutral wire, the Bypass is not required.

📌 Please note – Gen3: This is the original Shelly Bypass (S-Byp). For the Shelly 1L Gen3 and Shelly 2L Gen3, a separate, newer Bypass is available. Always check which Shelly device you have before ordering.

Applications

  • 🏠 Homes – for renovations or older installations without a neutral wire
  • 🏢 Apartments & hotels – wherever LED lighting is dimmed or switched without a neutral wire
  • 💡 Energy-efficient lamps – prevents glowing in LED and energy-saving lamp installations

Practical example: renovation without neutral wire

You install a Shelly Dimmer 2 behind an existing light point in an older home without a neutral wire. The LED lights flicker at a low dimming level. You mount the Shelly Bypass parallel to the lamp in the fixture — connected to the output (O) of the Dimmer 2 and the neutral wire (N) at the lamp's location. From then on, the dimmer works smoothly and without any flicker, even at the lowest dimming setting.

Minor drawback

The Bypass is only needed for low lamp wattages (up to approx. 10W for Dimmer 2, up to approx. 20W for Shelly 1L). At higher lamp wattages, sufficient current flows through the lamp for stable operation, and the Bypass is unnecessary.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

When do I need the Shelly Bypass?
You need the Bypass if you connect LED lamps to a Shelly Dimmer 2 or Shelly 1L (original) in an installation without a neutral wire, and the total lamp load is less than approx. 10W (Dimmer 2) or 20W (1L).

Where do I install the Bypass?
The Bypass is mounted parallel to the lamp, preferably in the fixture or flush-mounted box at the light point. It connects to the output (O) of your Shelly device and the neutral wire (N) at the lamp's location.

Does the Bypass also work with other dimmers or switches?
No, the Shelly Bypass (S-Byp) is specifically designed and tested for the Shelly Dimmer 2 and Shelly 1L (original). A different Bypass is required for the Shelly 1L Gen3 and 2L Gen3.

How many Bypasses do I need?
One Bypass per light circuit is sufficient in most cases, regardless of the number of lamps in that circuit.

Do I also need the Bypass if I have a neutral wire?
No. The Bypass is exclusively intended for installations without a neutral wire. In a complete 3-wire installation (L, N, PE), you do not need the Bypass.
