Wireless Zigbee Rotary Knob – Dimmer and Scene Switch
Dimming without a wall switch, without wiring and without tools. The DIYANI Zigbee rotary knob operates on a CR2450 coin cell battery and communicates directly via Zigbee 3.0. Turning sends a dimmer event to Home Assistant, a short press switches it on or off, a long press activates a scene, and a double press is freely configurable. Four actions in one compact device, mountable anywhere.
Power and connectivity
The rotary knob operates on a CR2450 3V coin cell battery (included). The standby consumption is only 8 microamperes, which for this type of coin cell battery results in a lifespan of many months with normal use. Communication takes place via Zigbee 3.0 with a range of at least 30 meters in open space. The device is a Zigbee EndDevice (model TS004F) and requires a Zigbee coordinator or gateway to function.
Operation and operating modes
The rotary knob works in two modes that you set via Zigbee2MQTT:
- Command mode (dimmer): turning sends direct brightness commands; suitable for dimming lights via automations in Home Assistant.
- Event/scene mode: turning and pressing generate separate events that you link to scenes, groups or other devices.
The available actions are: short press (on/off toggle), double press, long press, turn left (rotate_left) and turn right (rotate_right). All functions are directly available via the Tuya Smart Life app without additional configuration.
Mounting
The rotary knob comes with double-sided tape and can therefore be stuck to any smooth surface: wall, furniture, table or bedside table. No drilling, no installation, no wiring. If you want to mount the knob in a fixed place, it also fits a standard 86 mm wall box. Also check out our other wireless switches for more battery-powered control options.
Home Assistant
The DIYANI rotary knob (Zigbee model TS004F) works best via Zigbee2MQTT. In command mode, HA processes the rotation direction as a brightness adjustment via an automation or blueprint. Local control is confirmed; cloud is not required.
Pairing procedure via Zigbee2MQTT
- Put Zigbee2MQTT in pairing mode via the Zigbee2MQTT interface or the HA dashboard.
- Press and hold the pairing button on the bottom of the rotary knob for 5 seconds until the LED flashes.
- The device automatically appears in Zigbee2MQTT as TS004F.
- Set the operating mode via the Zigbee2MQTT interface: choose command mode for dimming or event mode for scene control.
- In HA, go to Settings > Devices & services > MQTT; the device appears as a new device.
- Use a community blueprint (search for "Tuya Smart Knob TS004F Zigbee2MQTT") for ready-made dimmer functionality.
Entities after pairing via Zigbee2MQTT: action-event (rotate_left, rotate_right, single, double, hold), battery percentage, linkquality.
Pairing procedure via ZHA
- In HA, go to Settings > Devices & services > ZHA > Add device.
- Press and hold the pairing button for 5 seconds until the LED flashes.
- ZHA recognizes the device as TS004F; click and rotation actions are available as ZHA events.
- Use a TS004F blueprint for ZHA (available via the HA community) for full functionality including rotation.
⚠️ ZHA does not fully support the TS004F out-of-the-box. Rotation events work via a blueprint, but command mode (direct dimmer control) is not available in ZHA. For smooth dimming via rotation, Zigbee2MQTT is strongly recommended.
Tuya Smart Life
Via a Tuya Zigbee gateway and the Smart Life app, all functions of the rotary knob work directly: dimming, on/off, activating scenes and setting tap-to-run automations. This is the simplest way to pair the knob without extra configuration, but requires an internet connection for cloud functions.
Homey
The DIYANI rotary knob can possibly be paired as Tuya Zigbee TS004F to Homey Pro (2023) via the built-in Zigbee stack, but official support is not confirmed. The most reliable route for Homey users is via Zigbee2MQTT as an external coordinator.
Other platforms
Via the Tuya Smart Life app, the rotary knob can be linked to Alexa and Google Home for voice control of linked scenes. Apple Home is not directly supported; indirect linking via Home Assistant and Homebridge is possible.
Automation examples
Example 1 – Turn to dim living room lamp (Zigbee2MQTT, command mode)
- Set the rotary knob to command mode via the Zigbee2MQTT interface.
- Trigger: Zigbee2MQTT action-event rotate_right or rotate_left of the rotary knob.
- Action: adjust the brightness of light.woonkamer by +10% (rotate_right) or -10% (rotate_left), with boundary monitoring 1%–100%.
- Use a community blueprint for TS004F for smooth dimmer control without threshold errors.
Example 2 – Long press activates evening scene
- Trigger: Zigbee2MQTT action-event hold of the rotary knob.
- Condition: time is after 19:00.
- Action: activate scene.eveningmodus (dimmed light, TV on, thermostat to 20°C).
Points of attention
- Zigbee coordinator or gateway is mandatory; the knob does not work standalone.
- For dimming via rotation, Zigbee2MQTT in command mode is the recommended route; ZHA does not support command mode.
- ZHA works via a community blueprint, but provides a more limited set of actions than Zigbee2MQTT.
- Direct pairing to Zigbee lamps without HA is only possible via a Tuya Zigbee gateway in the Smart Life app.
- Battery CR2450 is included in the package.
- Maximum range of 30 meters applies in open space; walls and obstacles reduce the range.
Contents of the box

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Zigbee hub?
Yes, the rotary knob is a Zigbee EndDevice and does not work standalone. You need a Zigbee coordinator, such as the SMLIGHT SLZB series in combination with Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA, or a Tuya Zigbee gateway for use via the Smart Life app.
Does dimming via rotation also work in ZHA?
Not out-of-the-box. In ZHA, rotation events are available via a community blueprint, but command mode (where rotation sends direct brightness commands) is only available in Zigbee2MQTT. For smooth dimming via rotation, Zigbee2MQTT is therefore the recommended route.
What is the difference between command mode and event mode?
In command mode, the rotary knob sends direct Zigbee brightness commands when turned, which you convert into lamp control in HA via an automation. In event mode, the knob generates separate events (rotate_left, rotate_right, single, double, hold) that you can freely link to any action in HA. You switch between modes via the Zigbee2MQTT interface.
Is the battery included?
Yes, the CR2450 coin cell battery (3V) is included in the package. The standby consumption of max 8µA ensures a long lifespan with normal use.
Can I connect the knob directly to a lamp without an app or hub?
Direct Zigbee binding to a lamp without a gateway is technically possible but requires additional configuration via ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT and does not always work reliably with this Tuya model. The most stable operation is via Home Assistant with Zigbee2MQTT and an automation.
Does the knob also work for curtains or other devices?
Yes, via Zigbee2MQTT in Home Assistant, you link the action-events to any entity. Think of controlling smart blinds, a media player or activating a complete automation scene. In event mode, the knob is completely freely configurable.
