Description
HEIMAN HS1SA-E – Zigbee 3.0 Smoke Detector with EN14604 Certification
A smoke detector you only trust if it's certified. The HEIMAN HS1SA-E is a photoelectric smoke detector with EN14604 certification — the European standard for smoke detectors — and communicates via Zigbee 3.0. Upon smoke detection, an 85 dB alarm sounds, and you receive an immediate notification on your phone, even when you're not home. The battery lasts up to three years without replacement.
Power and Connectivity
The smoke detector operates on one CR123A battery with a lifespan of up to three years. Communication is via Zigbee 3.0; the device is a Zigbee EndDevice and requires a Zigbee coordinator or gateway. The battery percentage is reported in Home Assistant but may take up to 24 hours for the first value to appear after pairing.
Detection and Alarm
The photoelectric smoke sensor detects visible smoke particles from smoldering fires early. Upon detection, the smoke detector activates an 85 dB acoustic alarm and a visual LED indicator. Via Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA, an alarm entity simultaneously appears in Home Assistant, which you can use to trigger a push notification or other automation.
Certification and Safety
The HS1SA-E complies with the European standard EN14604 (DIN EN14604), the legal standard for smoke detectors in the Netherlands and Belgium. In the Netherlands, a working smoke detector is legally required on every floor of a dwelling. CE-certified. Also, check out our other smoke detectors for a complete overview.
Home Assistant
The HEIMAN HS1SA-E works via Zigbee2MQTT and ZHA, both fully local without cloud. Pairing occurs as a standard Zigbee smoke detector; the device is widely supported on both platforms.
Pairing procedure via Zigbee2MQTT
- Put Zigbee2MQTT in pairing mode via the interface or the HA dashboard.
- Press the side button of the smoke detector with a paperclip for more than 2 seconds; the LED will flash quickly.
- The device will automatically appear as HEIMAN HS1SA-E in Zigbee2MQTT.
- Keep the device awake during pairing by briefly pressing the side button every 2 seconds until pairing is confirmed in the Zigbee2MQTT logs.
- In HA, go to Settings > Devices & Services > MQTT; the smoke detector will appear as a new device.
Entities after pairing: smoke (on/off), battery (percentage, can take up to 24 hours after pairing), battery_low (warning), test (test alarm active). Local operation confirmed, cloud is not required.
Pairing procedure via ZHA
- In HA, go to Settings > Devices & Services > ZHA > Add device.
- Press the side button with a paperclip for more than 2 seconds until the LED flashes.
- ZHA will immediately recognize the device; entities are available without additional configuration.
- Keep the device awake by briefly pressing the side button every 2 seconds until pairing is confirmed.
Tuya Smart Life
Via a Tuya Zigbee gateway and the Smart Life app, you receive push notifications on your phone upon smoke detection. Useful as a supplement to the local alarm but requires an internet connection for cloud functions.
Homey
The HS1SA-E is compatible with Homey Pro via the official Heiman app in the Homey Appstore. Note: Homey sometimes automatically recognizes the device via the Trust Smart Home (ZigBee) app, which leads to limited functionality. Disable the Trust Smart Home (ZigBee) app via More > Apps > Trust Smart Home (ZigBee) > Settings, and re-pair the smoke detector so that the Heiman app is used correctly. View the Homey assortment for compatible hardware.
Other platforms
Via the Tuya Smart Life app, the smoke detector can be linked to Alexa and Google Home for voice notifications. Apple Home is not directly supported; indirect linking via Home Assistant and Homebridge is possible.
Automation Examples
Example 1 – Push notification upon smoke detection
- Trigger: binary_sensor.rookmelder_keuken becomes on.
- Action: send push notification to all phones in the household: "⚠️ Smoke detected in the kitchen! Check immediately."
- Optional: turn on smart lights in the house to 100% brightness as a visual alarm.
Example 2 – Battery monitoring with weekly check
- Trigger: sensor.rookmelder_batterij drops below 20%.
- Condition: no notification has been sent in the past 7 days (use an input_boolean as a flag).
- Action: send push notification "Smoke detector battery almost empty, replace the CR123A" and set the input_boolean to on.
- Reset the input_boolean weekly via a second automation so the notification can be sent again.
Points of Attention
- Zigbee coordinator or gateway is mandatory; the smoke detector does not work standalone.
- Use a paperclip for the side button during pairing; the test button on top is exclusively for testing the alarm.
- Keep the device awake during pairing by pressing the side button every 2 seconds.
- The battery percentage may take up to 24 hours after pairing before it is visible in HA.
- Mount the smoke detector on the ceiling or high on the wall, at least 50 cm from the corner.
- Avoid direct mounting above the stove due to the risk of false alarms.
- Test the smoke detector monthly via the test button on top of the device.
- Replace the battery after a maximum of three years, even if the detector is still functioning.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this smoke detector legally approved for use in the Netherlands?
Yes. The HS1SA-E is certified according to EN14604, the European standard that smoke detectors in the Netherlands must legally comply with. In the Netherlands, a smoke detector on every floor is legally mandatory for new builds; it is also highly recommended for existing homes.
Do I need a Zigbee hub?
Yes, the smoke detector is a Zigbee EndDevice and does not work standalone. You need a Zigbee coordinator, such as the SMLIGHT SLZB series in combination with Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA, or a Tuya Zigbee gateway for use via the Smart Life app.
How do I pair the smoke detector with Zigbee2MQTT?
Use a paperclip to press the side button for more than 2 seconds until the LED flashes rapidly. Keep the device awake by briefly pressing the side button every 2 seconds until Zigbee2MQTT confirms the pairing. The test button on top of the device is exclusively for testing the alarm.
Is the battery included?
Yes, the CR123A battery is included in the packaging. Its lifespan is a maximum of three years with normal use. The battery percentage appears in HA via a battery entity but may take up to 24 hours after initial pairing before the value is visible.
Can I receive a notification on my phone when smoke is detected?
Yes. Via Home Assistant, you can set up an automation that sends a push notification directly to your phone upon smoke detection, even when you're not home. This works entirely locally via the HA Companion app, without cloud dependency.
Does the smoke detector work with Homey?
Yes, via the official Heiman app in the Homey Appstore. Note that Homey sometimes recognizes the device via the Trust Smart Home (ZigBee) app; disable that app and re-pair the smoke detector to activate the Heiman app correctly. View our Homey assortment for compatible hardware.
Where is the best place to mount the smoke detector?
On the ceiling or high on the wall, at least 50 cm from the corner and away from ventilation openings. Avoid direct mounting above the stove due to the risk of false alarms. Each floor level in the home needs its own smoke detector for optimal safety.
