Aqara Floor Heating Thermostat W500
Underfloor heating without smart control often runs too long or switches too slowly, wasting energy. The Aqara W500 measures room and floor temperature and controls the heating circuit based on an adjustable weekly schedule with up to 7 time slots per day, ensuring the temperature remains accurate within the set range.
Power and connectivity
The thermostat is permanently connected to 220-250 VAC, 50/60 Hz, and switches a heating circuit up to a maximum of 16 A and 3600 W for resistive loads. For wireless connection, the device chooses between Zigbee 3.0 or Thread/Matter, with Bluetooth only used for initial pairing in the Aqara Home app. Important: the protocol is set via a firmware flash in the Aqara app; Zigbee and Thread/Matter do not work simultaneously on one device.
Functionality and settings
The weekly schedule offers up to 7 time slots per day for temperature profiles, with a temperature calibration of ±0 to 5°C according to the manufacturer. Users in the Home Assistant community report that the practical calibration range is closer to ±2.5°C, so don't rely blindly on the full manufacturer's specification. The display shows current temperature and humidity, and the casing measures 86 x 86 x 45 mm.
Expansion and sensor pairing
For accurate floor measurement, the W500 uses an external NTC sensor with a beta value of 3950, supporting 10k, 50k, or 100k Ohm variants. Additionally, the device pairs with separate Aqara temperature sensors for additional measurement points in the home, and can be combined with products from the Aqara collection for a more extensive system.
Safety and reliability
The device has built-in frost protection, floor overheating protection, overload protection, and protection against overheating of the device itself, and automatically pauses if a window is open or there is a sudden temperature drop.
Home Assistant
In Zigbee mode, the W500 integrates via ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT under the model number lumi.airrtc.aeu001, although support in Z2M was initially limited and later added through community contributions. Pairing is done by first flashing the device to Zigbee mode in the Aqara app, then resetting it and adding it via the Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA pairing procedure. After pairing, a climate entity, temperature sensors for room and floor, and a power measurement entity appear, although the community reports that power measurement in some cases is a factor of 10 too low. Local control after pairing via Z2M or ZHA is confirmed without cloud dependency; the Aqara cloud is only needed for the one-time firmware flash.
In Thread/Matter mode, the device integrates directly via Matter into Home Assistant, provided a Thread Border Router is active, for example via an Aqara hub or a Home Assistant Connect dongle.
Homey
For Homey Pro, the W500 works in Zigbee mode via the community app for Aqara devices, generally with less granular automation options than in Home Assistant. Direct official Matter pairing on Homey is not currently confirmed, so check this beforehand if in doubt.
Other platforms
In addition to Home Assistant and Homey, the W500 works via Thread/Matter with Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa.
Automation examples
- Everyday schedule: In Home Assistant, set a timed automation that sets the W500's climate entity to 20°C at 06:00 and back to 17°C at 22:00.
- Advanced: Connect a door/window sensor to an automation that sets the thermostat to "off" as soon as a window has been open for more than 5 minutes and the room temperature drops by more than 1°C within that time, with a push notification to your phone.
Points of attention
Zigbee and Thread/Matter are not simultaneously active; switching requires the Aqara app and a firmware flash each time. Power measurement in Home Assistant may deviate from the actual value, and the practical calibration margin may be lower than the stated ±5°C. ⚠️

Frequently asked questions
Does the W500 work without an Aqara hub in Home Assistant?
Yes, in Zigbee mode you can pair directly via a Zigbee coordinator with ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT, without needing an Aqara hub.
Can I use Zigbee and Thread/Matter simultaneously?
No, you choose a protocol via the Aqara app and a firmware flash; both modes do not work simultaneously on the same device.
Is the floor sensor included in the box?
Yes, the NTC floor sensor is included as standard according to the manufacturer.
Can I expand the W500 with additional sensors?
Yes, you can pair separate Aqara temperature sensors for additional measurement points in the home.
Does power measurement always work correctly in Home Assistant?
Not guaranteed; users report that power measurement in some cases is a factor of 10 lower than the actual value.
Is the W500 suitable for hydronic underfloor heating?
Yes, by connecting to an external valve, the thermostat is also suitable for hydronic systems.
