Description

The DIYANI ZG-227Z is a compact Zigbee 3.0 sensor that measures temperature and humidity in real time and reports it to your smart home hub (a Zigbee coordinator that controls Zigbee devices). Ideal for monitoring the climate in living rooms, bedrooms, basements, or offices, and for controlling heaters, fans, or dehumidifiers based on accurate data. This sensor works completely locally via Zigbee 3.0 (a protocol for wireless smart home devices), without cloud dependency, and automatically reports the current values to your hub every 5 minutes.

What can this sensor do?

The ZG-227Z is a battery-powered sensor that measures temperature (from -10°C to +50°C) and humidity (0%–95% RH) with high accuracy (±0.3°C for temperature, ±3% for humidity). The device uses Zigbee 3.0 to communicate wirelessly with compatible hubs and platforms like Home Assistant, allowing you to monitor the climate and create automations (for example, turning on a fan if the humidity rises above 70%).

Connectivity and protocols

  • Protocol: Zigbee 3.0 (requires a Zigbee hub such as Home Assistant with ZHA, Zigbee2MQTT, Homey Pro, or similar coordinators)
  • Communication: Wireless, mesh network (the sensor does not extend the Zigbee network, it only works as an end device)
  • Reporting interval: Temperature, humidity and battery status are automatically reported every 5 minutes
  • Range: Up to approx. 30 meters of open space between sensor and hub (depending on obstacles and other Zigbee devices in the network)

Platform compatibility

  • Home Assistant: Excellent support via ZHA (native Zigbee integration in HA) and Zigbee2MQTT; reports entities for temperature, humidity, and battery percentage
  • Other hubs: Compatible with Tuya Smart/Smart Life app (via Tuya Zigbee gateway), Homey Pro, and other Zigbee 3.0 certified hubs
  • Voice Assistants: Works with Alexa and Google Assistant via supported hubs (e.g., "Alexa, what is the humidity in the living room?")
  • Matter: No native Matter support; only via Zigbee 3.0

Nutrition and energy

  • Battery: CR2450 (3V, included with purchase)
  • Battery life: Approximately 1 year at normal reporting intervals (every 5 minutes), depending on ambient temperature and signal strength
  • Battery Status: Battery percentage is reported in ZHA and Zigbee2MQTT for proactive low power alerts

Functional properties and sensor properties

  • Temperature range: -10 °C to +55 °C (suitable for indoor and unheated areas)
  • Temperature accuracy: ±0.3 °C (high precision for reliable climate automation)
  • Temperature resolution: 0.1 °C (fine measurements, ideal for heating controls)
  • Humidity range: 0%–99% RH (relative humidity, no condensation)
  • Humidity accuracy: ±3% RH (sufficiently accurate for mold prevention and comfort monitoring)
  • Humidity resolution: 1% RH
  • Sensor type: Digital temperature and humidity sensor
  • Response time: Automatic update every 5 minutes; sensor responds to climate changes within seconds, but only reports at the next interval

Automation and smart home integration

  • Automations in Home Assistant: Build scenes and automations based on temperature and humidity thresholds (e.g. turn on dehumidifier at >70% RH, adjust heating at <18°C)
  • Calibration: Temperature and humidity calibration only adjustable via Zigbee2MQTT (absolute offset for more accurate measurements in case of deviation)
  • Graphical representation: Historical data (temperature/humidity over time) visualizable in Home Assistant Lovelace dashboards or Grafana
  • Alerts: Set push notifications when temperature or humidity limits are exceeded (e.g. risk of frost, risk of mold)

Software and updates

  • OTA updates: Over-the-air firmware updates supported via Zigbee2MQTT (subject to availability of new firmware from manufacturer)
  • Configuration: Full configuration via Home Assistant ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT
  • Device support: Officially listed in the Zigbee2MQTT database (model ZG-227Z, vendor HOBEIAN/Tuya), tested and working in ZHA

Physical and installation

  • Dimensions: Ø 40 mm x 13 mm (compact round housing, comparable to a large button cell battery)
  • Weight: Approximately 13 grams (including battery)
  • Mounting: Self-adhesive 3M tape or can be placed freestanding on a flat surface
  • Material: Plastic housing, light and durable
  • Ventilation: Small air hole in housing for accurate humidity measurement and air circulation
  • Pairing button: Reset/pairing button on back (press for 5 seconds with supplied pin for pairing mode)

Environment and sustainability

  • Operating temperature: -10 °C to +55 °C (sensor remains operational within this range)
  • Humidity (operating): 0%–99% RH
  • IP rating: Not available (sensor is not waterproof, for indoor use only)
  • Durability: Battery life up to 1 year minimizes maintenance frequency; low energy consumption

Performance and latency

  • Reporting speed: Automatic update every 5 minutes; instant reporting when significant changes are detected (temperature >±0.6 °C, humidity >±6%)
  • Network latency: Zigbee 3.0 offers low latency (typically <1 second between reporting and receiving by hub)
  • Reliability: Stable connection within Zigbee mesh network; sensor stays consistently connected (tested in Home Assistant ZHA)

Safety and certification

  • Zigbee certification: Zigbee 3.0 certified (interoperability with all Zigbee 3.0 hubs)
  • Encryption: Zigbee 3.0 security layer (AES-128 encryption for secure communication)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Does the DIYANI ZG-227Z work with Home Assistant?

Yes, the sensor works perfectly with Home Assistant via ZHA (Zigbee Home Automation) and Zigbee2MQTT. When paired, the temperature, humidity, and battery percentage values automatically appear, without any additional configuration. The sensor reports the current values every 5 minutes.

How long does the battery last?

The included CR2450 battery lasts approximately 1 year at standard reporting intervals (every 5 minutes). Actual battery life depends on ambient temperature, signal strength, and reporting frequency. Home Assistant displays the battery status so you can replace it promptly.

Which Zigbee protocol does this sensor support?

The ZG-227Z uses Zigbee 3.0, the latest and most compatible Zigbee protocol. This means the sensor works with all Zigbee 3.0-certified hubs, such as Home Assistant (with Zigbee coordinator), Homey Pro, Tuya Zigbee gateways, and similar systems.

Does this sensor support Matter?

No, the DIYANI ZG-227Z does not natively support Matter and only works via Zigbee 3.0. For Matter functionality, you'll need a Matter bridge or hub that can translate Zigbee devices (for example, via Home Assistant with Matter server integration).

What is the range of the sensor?

The ZigBee range is up to approximately 30 meters in open space between the sensor and the hub. In a practical living environment (with walls and obstacles), the range is typically 10–20 meters. ZigBee repeaters (powered devices like smart plugs) strengthen the network and extend the range.

Can I use the sensor for climate automation?

Yes, the sensor is ideal for automations such as controlling heaters, fans, or dehumidifiers based on temperature and humidity thresholds. You can easily create automations in Home Assistant (e.g., fan on at >70% RH, heating up at <18°C).

How accurate are the measurements?

The sensor has a temperature accuracy of ±0.3°C and a humidity accuracy of ±3% RH. This is sufficiently accurate for most smart home applications, such as comfort monitoring, mold prevention, and heating control. You can optionally set calibration offsets via ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT for even more precise measurements.
