Description

The DIYANI ZG-204ZL is an ultra-compact 2-in-1 Zigbee 3.0 sensor that detects both motion (via PIR sensor, passive infrared sensor that detects heat radiation) and ambient light (lux meter). With its miniature dimensions (Ø 33 x 26 mm) and wide detection angle of 135°, this sensor is ideal for smart lighting automations, energy saving and presence detection in living rooms, bedrooms, hallways, toilets or offices. Thanks to the built-in light meter, you can create automations that only switch on lights when it is actually too dark, significantly reducing your energy bill.

What does the DIYANI ZG-204ZL do and what is it?

The ZG-204ZL combines a PIR motion sensor with a lux sensor (measures ambient light levels from 0 to 3000 lux, depending on firmware). The device communicates wirelessly with your smart home hub via Zigbee 3.0 (a protocol for wireless smart home devices) and reports real-time motion detection, light intensity, and battery status. The sensor has an adjustable cooldown period (also called the keep time) that determines how long the motion status remains active after detection; for this model, the fastest cooldown is 7 seconds, but can be adjusted to 30, 60, or 120 seconds via Zigbee2MQTT.

Connectivity and protocols

  • Protocol: Zigbee 3.0 (requires Zigbee hub such as Home Assistant with ZHA/Zigbee2MQTT)
  • Communication: Wireless, end device (does not amplify the Zigbee mesh network, receiver only)
  • Detection range: 5 meters (depending on mounting height and obstacles)
  • Detection angle: 135° horizontal (wide coverage for rooms up to approx. 20 m²)
  • Zigbee distance: Up to 100 meters of open space between sensor and hub (in practice 15-30 meters indoors, depending on walls and Zigbee routers)

Platform compatibility

  • Home Assistant: Excellent support via ZHA (Zigbee Home Automation, native integration in HA) and Zigbee2MQTT; reports entities for motion (occupancy), illumination (illuminance), battery, sensitivity (sensitivity), cool-down time (keep_time), and lux measurement interval (illuminance_interval).
  • Tuya Smart/Smart Life: Compatible via Tuya Zigbee gateway (cloud-based, less local control)
  • HomeKit: Indirectly via Homebridge with Zigbee2MQTT bridge (exposes motion, lux, and battery as HomeKit accessories)
  • Voice assistants: Alexa and Google Assistant via supported hubs (e.g., "Alexa announcement: Motion detected in the hallway")
  • Matter: No native Matter support; only via Zigbee 3.0

Nutrition and energy

  • Battery: CR2450 (3V button cell battery, included)
  • Battery life: Approximately 1 year with normal use (depending on detection frequency, reporting interval and ambient temperature)
  • Standby consumption: ≤12 µA (very low power consumption for long battery life)
  • Battery Status: Battery percentage is reported in ZHA and Zigbee2MQTT

Functional properties and sensor properties

  • PIR sensor type: Passive infrared motion detector (detects heat radiation from moving people/animals)
  • Detection angle: 135° horizontal (ideal for corner placement or central mounting on ceiling/wall)
  • Detection distance: 5 meters (depending on mounting height; optimal at 2-2.5 meters height)
  • Cooldown (keep-time): Adjustable to 7, 30, 60 or 120 seconds via Zigbee2MQTT (determines how long motion status remains active after last detection; often 7 sec by default)
  • Sensitivity: Adjustable to low, medium or high via Zigbee2MQTT (higher sensitivity detects smaller movements at a greater distance)
  • Lux sensor (light meter): Measures ambient light from 0 to 1000 lux (older firmware) or 0 to 3000 lux (newer firmware versions)
  • Lux measurement interval: Adjustable from 1 to 720 minutes via Zigbee2MQTT (how often the sensor measures light intensity; standard often 10-30 minutes)
  • PIR Response Time: Very fast (detection occurs instantly after motion; cooldown of at least 7 seconds before motion can be reported again)

Automation and smart home integration

  • Smart lighting: Switch on lights only when motion is detected and when ambient light is below the threshold (e.g., <50 lux); prevents lights from switching on unnecessarily during the day.
  • Energy Saving: Automatically turn off light after cooldown period (10-120 sec) when no more motion is detected
  • Presence simulation: Build scenes for vacation mode where lights randomly turn on when (simulated) motion is detected
  • Zones and rooms: Combine multiple ZG-204ZL sensors for multi-zone detection (e.g. hallway, living room, bedroom) with different light settings per room
  • Daylight control: Use lux values to automatically open/close shutters or adjust dimmable lighting to natural light
  • Alerts: Push notifications for motion when no one is supposed to be home (security automation)
  • Graphs and logging: Visualize historical lux data in Home Assistant (see sunrise time, maximum light intensity during the day)

Software and updates

  • Configuration: Full configuration of sensitivity, dwell time and illumination interval via Zigbee2MQTT (settings only adjustable when sensor is active, i.e. during motion detection)
  • Calibration: Lux calibration possible via Zigbee2MQTT (percentage offset for more accurate light measurements)
  • ZHA support: Works out-of-the-box with Home Assistant ZHA (motion, lux, battery immediately available; lux sensor may need to be manually enabled in MQTT integration)
  • Zigbee2MQTT database: Officially supported as ZG-204ZL (model TS0601, various hardware variants)
  • OTA updates: Over-the-air firmware updates possible via Zigbee2MQTT (subject to availability of updates from manufacturer)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Does the DIYANI ZG-204ZL work with Home Assistant?

Yes, the sensor works perfectly with Home Assistant via ZHA and Zigbee2MQTT. Upon pairing, entities for motion (occupancy), illumination, and battery automatically appear. In ZHA, the lux sensor may need to be manually enabled via the MQTT integration settings. Via Zigbee2MQTT, all functions are immediately available, including configuration of sensitivity, cooldown, and lux measurement interval.

What is the cooldown time and can I adjust it?

The cooldown time (keep time) determines how long the motion status remains active after the last detection. The ZG-204ZL supports adjustable cooldown periods of 7, 30, 60, or 120 seconds via Zigbee 2MQTT. 10-30 seconds is recommended for restrooms and hallways, and 60-120 seconds for living rooms. Note: Settings can only be adjusted while the sensor is detecting motion (low-power design).

How accurate is the lux sensor?

The lux sensor measures ambient light from 0 to 3000 lux (newer firmware) or 0 to 1000 lux (older firmware). There is a known issue where values are sometimes reported too high. This can be resolved via lux calibration in Zigbee2MQTT (setting the percentage offset). Practical experience shows that the sensor distinguishes well between darkness (<50 lux), normal daylight (200-500 lux), and bright sunlight (>1000 lux), which is sufficient for lighting automation.

Does this sensor support Matter?

No, the DIYANI ZG-204ZL does not natively support Matter and only works with Zigbee 3.0. For Matter functionality, you'll need a Matter bridge that can translate Zigbee devices, for example, via Home Assistant with Matter server integration or Homey Pro with Matter support.

What is the detection range and best mounting position?

The sensor has a detection angle of 135° and a range of 5 meters (depending on the mounting height). For optimal performance, mount the sensor at a height of 2 to 2.5 meters, preferably in a corner of the room or centrally on the ceiling. Mounting it higher increases the horizontal range, but reduces the reliability of small movements. For hallways and restrooms, wall mounting at eye level (1.5-2 meters) works well.

How long does the battery last?

The included CR2450 battery lasts approximately 1 year with normal use (standby consumption ≤12 µA). Actual battery life depends on the detection frequency (how often motion is detected), cooldown setting, lux measurement interval, and ambient temperature. Frequent motion detection (e.g., in busy hallways) can impact battery life. Home Assistant reports the battery status (can take up to 24 hours after initial pairing), so you can replace it in time.

Can I use the sensor for smart lighting automation?

Absolutely, its 2-in-1 functionality (motion + lux) makes this sensor perfect for intelligent lighting automations. Build automations in Home Assistant that turn on lights only when motion is detected and when ambient light is below a threshold (e.g., <50 lux). This prevents lights from turning on during the day, which can reduce your energy consumption by 60-80% compared to simple motion sensors without lux detection. Combine multiple sensors for multi-zone control with different light settings per room.
